THE BERNHARD PERSPECTIVE
Heard anything about Greenland recently? It’s been pretty much out of the news for a while, now. I suspect that’s because it was never about Greenland. We never saw a U.S. military build-up in the North Sea, no carrier group, no fleet armada like we’ve seen in the Caribbean and Persian Gulf. T**** talks a good game, but BS is still BS.
And there’s a simple reason for that. Right now, the United States has one base in a very remote corner of the island. But under an obscure Cold War agreement, the United States already enjoys sweeping military access in Greenland.
The agreement allows us to “construct, install, maintain, and operate” military bases across Greenland, “house personnel” and “control landings, takeoffs, anchorages, moorings, movements, and operation of ships, aircraft, and waterborne craft.”
It was signed in 1951 by the United States and Denmark, which colonized Greenland more than 300 years ago and still controls some of its affairs.
The U.S. has such a free hand in Greenland right now that it can pretty much do what it wants. Donald T**** could get everything he covets except outright ownership of the island if he just asked nicely.
However, being an uncivilized jerk, The Tdrumpfenfürher doesn’t know how to ask nicely. Instead, like his Nazi idol, he simply wants to bully, bomb and kill, and take what is not his.
